A free informational session about solar energy will be held at 7 p.m. March 1 in the Garrett Information Enterprise Center, Room 111, at Garrett College.
The nonprofit Solar United Neighbors/MD SUN
and the Mountain Maryland Solar Co-op, for homeowners in Garrett and Allegany counties will show how individuals can join others and save on solar products and installation through the power of bulk purchasing.
Solar United Neighbors is a nationwide effort. The membership-driven organization provides technical expertise and consumer advocacy for communities going solar.
“We’re really looking forward to bringing our program to Garrett County to help households transition to solar,” said Lauren Barchi, MD SUN program director. “It’s exciting to see more people realize that they can use the sun to reduce or eliminate their monthly electric bills.”
Guests will learn how the program connects residents interested in solar installations. MD SUN walks collective groups through the process by assessing their own solar needs, putting out competitive bids, and through the final step of choosing a contractor.
Barchi said MD SUN wants to make solar options available to every resident looking for long-term savings on energy costs, while converting to clean energy consumption.
The organization is also researching possible grant funding through the United States Department of Agriculture that would offer more affordable solar solutions for small farms and businesses. Updates on the latest grant opportunities will be included in the program.
