The July Arts Connection sponsored by Garrett County Arts Council
will highlight the new Friendsville Interactive History Tour. This month’s event will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on July 27th.
Artists, board members of arts organizations and “anyone interested in creating a strong arts community in Garrett County” are encouraged to attend this free event, said Karen Reckner, Executive DIrector of the Arts Council.
Guests should meet on Water Street in Friendsville near the Riverside Hotel. A brief guided walking tour will take place to view several of the tour markers.
Friendsville residents Crede Calhoun and Ina Hicks were instrumental in creating the historical documentation, which was funded in part by a Community Arts Development grant from Garrett County Arts Council. Information and oral history interviews may be viewed online at www.visitfriendsville.org/historytour.
After the walking tour, attendees will convene at Ken’s Irish Pub for networking. Artists are encouraged to bring samples of their work to show. Thursday evening is Open Mic night at Ken’s Irish Pub, so musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments for a jam session. Local authors are also encouraged to participate by reading some of their original writing.
The Arts Connection, is a project of GCAC through their Arts RoundTable program.
“Attendees can mix and mingle, introduce themselves to their peers and get to know other local makers,” Reckner said.
“Whether you are a painter, woodworker, photographer, musician, writer, other artist, board member, employee or just someone with a passion for the arts, you are encouraged to bring an open mind and your curiosity,” said GCAC board member and event coordinator Amy Umbel. “Learn what is happening in the arts around the county, and share your ideas and plans.”
By making connections with similar creative residents, GCAC strives to grow the interest in the arts around the region.
The Arts Connection is a series of monthly events held the last Thursday of each month at various locations around the area. Details will be posted on the calendar portion of GCAC website, as well as in this newspaper
