Seafood lovers know the importance of quality and flavor when it comes to their dining experience, and at Deep Creek Seafood
you’ll find plenty of both! Deep Creek Seafood is owned by Pittsburgh native Nate Beachler and his wife Kathy. Nate started in the restaurant business at the age of 15 washing dishes at L&N Seafood. He continued working in the hospitality business throughout college and early career doing everything from bartending to cooking to management, working in various restaurants from Park City, Utah to Washington, DC. While in DC, Nate worked for the OceanAire, a very popular seafood restaurant, working his way up to General Manager when they opened their Baltimore location.
After the restaurant was sold, Nate decided to pursue a different career selling wine and spirits. As his two children grew, he and Kathy wanted a quieter lifestyle. His parents had been coming to Deep Creek Lake for over 40 years and when the old Crab Shack property went on the market at the lake, Nate knew it was his chance to open the seafood restaurant he had always dreamed of. “I love the restaurant business,” says Nate. “Any good restaurant owner just wants to make people happy – to offer a place with good ambiance, service and quality food.”
After extensive renovation of the kitchen and bar area, Deep Creek Seafood opened in September of 2015. Nate admits opening after tourist season was an odd choice but he wanted a chance to set his own pace, work through the kinks, and build up a loyal customer base.
Deep Creek Seafood offers a variety of your favorite seafood dishes including oysters, mussels, shrimp, crab cakes, tuna, Mahi Mahi, Salmon and much more. From salads and soups to sandwiches and entrees, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the variety on this menu. They have snow crabs available year round and Maryland crabs on weekends during the summer which Nate sells by the dozen or the bushel.
His biggest sellers are the fried calamari, fish n’ chips and crab cake sandwiches, all made with quality seafood. “Of course, we use fresh whenever possible, but that isn’t always possible with our location,” explains Nate. “So we work with fishermen who have perfected a process of freezing their catch right after it’s caught so it’s as close to fresh as we can make it.” There are even some delicious options for the non-seafood lovers in your group.
Nate and his crew offer up various weekly specials which have become quite popular. Tuesday is Taco Night featuring $5 tacos with your choice of fish, shrimp, calamari or tuna served with a housemade Mango Salsa and Pickle Slaw. You can mix and match to create your own tasty creations.
Wednesday is Shrimp Night, Nate’s own play on Wing Night. For $8.50 you can enjoy a half pound of shrimp cooked the way you like it..steamed, sautéed, grilled or fried with one of six different sauces. For a bit of comfort food, come by on Thursdays when Nate offers an ever changing variety of food for the soul… things like steak, stuffed sole, lasagna, barbecue chicken and more. They also have a soup of the day, as well as daily drink and dinner specials which Nate describes as their “Test Kitchen”, because many of the dishes have been so well received they eventually make it to the main menu.
Before dinner, come early for one of the most popular happy hours on the lake, just $3 Miller Lite, Bud Light or Michelob Ultra or $5 house wine. Or enjoy one of their specialty cocktails on their expansive deck with a gorgeous view of the lake. Their bar has over 40 varieties of bourbon, rye and whiskey. “Because of my job selling wine and spirits, I forged a lot of relationships with small family owned distilleries and I feature many of them here.”
Don’t forget dessert! Kathy is the baker in the family and serves up a variety of freshly made seasonal treats to end your dinner on a sweet note. The family has started a garden on the property which supplies some of the herbs and produce they use throughout the summer including mint for their delicious mojitos and apples and strawberries Kathy features in her desserts including delicious cobblers. Other specialties include Kathy’s flourless chocolate cake, cookie pie, Boston Cream Pie and bread pudding.
Nate is proud that Deep Creek Seafood is a family affair, both his and Kathy’s parents live locally and help out as they can. Nate also has two great chefs in his kitchen, Chef Ian Wooden and Sous Chef Adam VanBogelen, both with years of kitchen experience behind them. Deep Creek Seafood also has a variety of burgers and po’ boys on the menu and a Kids Menu for the little ones. Having a special occasion?
