No trip to downtown Oakland would be complete without a visit to Englander’s Antiques and Collectibles, home of Dottie’s Fountain & Grill. Serving the fine folks of Garrett County since 1946, Englander’s is the place “where friends, old and new, meet and celebrate.”

Englanders was established by Clint Englander as a pharmacy in the 1940’s. As did many pharmacies of its day, the facility offered a variety of products and services, including a lunch counter and soda fountain for shoppers and local businessmen.

Although the business was leased to others, it was run as a pharmacy until 2000. With competition from larger chains, the pharmacy no longer was a viable option but Englander didn’t want to put the grill, which was still as popular as it had ever been, out of business.

He then formulated the idea to turn his 8,000 square foot corner lot building into an Antique Center, keeping the Grill as it was. Sixteen years later, the business is still as popular as ever. Although Englander sold the building some years ago to Bob and Carol Smith, the new owners have been dedicated to keeping the operation as is.

Today Englander’s hosts over 50 different vendors selling a huge variety of antiques, jewelry and collectibles. You’ll find toys, quilts, furniture, primitives, glassware, china, enamelware and so much more. The operation is held together by three hardworking local ladies: Debbie Duling, Crystal Noland and, longtime employee Jeannie Noland.

Sports fans will find baseball cards and other sports paraphernalia. You’ll also find great gifts for babies and even those “hard to buy for” people on your list with unique collectibles that are like a walk down memory lane.

Even better, you’ll still find Dottie Uphold at the helm of the Fountain & Grill, where she’s been for the past ? years(when asked how long, she said “I have lost track”). Dottie and her courteous and efficient staff serve up delicious and affordable breakfasts and lunches daily, yes, all 366 days this year.

The menu is large and varied with Dottie’s steak subs and fresh burgers a local favorite. Dottie is also known for her breakfasts, especially her genuine buckwheat cakes and sausage, served daily. Don’t forget to leave room for dessert! Dottie’s Fountain & Grill serves delicious hand dipped milkshakes(just like the ones you had as a kid), sundaes and ice cream sodas...all from their original 1950’s counter which is truly a step back in time on every visit.

Englander’s is open Monday through Saturday from 8:30 - 5; Sunday from 8:30 to 5. The lunch counter is open 8:30 to 3 daily, 8:30 to 2 on Sundays. For great shopping and dining, and a trip down memory lane, stop by Englanders today for a taste of old fashioned goodness.
